The best (and scariest) military horror movies.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT While military movies and horror movies might not always seem to go together, the terrors of war can sometimes blend perfectly with a more traditional sort of fantastical genre fare. Horror movies typically contrast a seemingly safe location, like a quiet neighborhood, with a terrifying threat.
9 The Lair The Lair is a much gorier, less subtle type of horror movie than R-Point. However, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Director Neil Marshall’s earlier creature feature The Descent was a work of sheer intensity and brutality, and The Lair effectively recreates that movie's appeal. However, where The Descent follows a group of inexperienced cavers pitted against monstrous beings, The Lair’s military heroes have a much better chance of survival thanks to their combat experience.
7 Below Released the same year as Deathwatch, 2002’s Below is an underrated deep sea horror movie that genre aficionados won’t want to miss out on. Based on a story idea partially developed by Darren Aronofsky, Below sees Pitch Black director David Twohy send a set of U.S. Marines down into the depths of the sea to retrieve a lost submarine. Once they are down in the darkness, the crew finds that the isolation begins playing tricks on their heads.
5 Ghosts of War Ghosts of War was largely ignored upon release despite its impressive cast including the likes of Kyle Gallner, Alan Ritchson, and Billy Zane. The movie’s story follows a group of soldiers holding down a French chateau in 1944 who find themselves besieged by a mysterious force that seems supernatural in nature. Without giving too much away, Ghosts of War incorporates a third genre into its military horror movie blend before the end credits roll.
