“She saw a script that reflected the real concerns of people at a precarious age,” says Maisie, “a time that can be messy, when you're told you're all potential, but the world seems to have other ideas. That must have resonated with her.”As well as her casual attitude to red carpet attire, Winona often used her external appearance to “front out” her troubles.
But during the subsequent trial, one of her outfits – a Marc Jacobs dress – didn't go unnoticed. “Rather than cowering and shying away” as Maisie puts it, “she did something quite bold and quite daring.”The Duffer Brothers were relatively unknown when Winona Ryder met them to discuss their Goonies-meets-Stephen-King pitch. She spent over fours hours with them before deciding to take a chance on this intriguing small screen project. The rest is, of course, cult TV history.
