Stephen King movies like The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption got their due come award season, but others deserved Oscar nominations too.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Foundational horror author Stephen King has had countless adaptations of his work, and while some of the more famous movies, like The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption, received Oscar nods, there were iconic performances, visual effects, and production design elements in other films that flew under the radar.
9 The Shining If there ever was an adaptation of his work that King hated, it was Stanley Kubrick's iteration of his flagship novel The Shining. Set at the secluded Overlook Hotel during a bitter winter, The Shining sees writer Jack Torrance slowly losing his mind as he and his family are haunted by the ghosts that reside there. Kubrick's adaptation diverges pretty heavily from its source material, even changing the antagonist's goals to tell its spine-chilling tale.
7 IT Chapter One Andy Muschietti's remake of IT had big shoes to fill, especially after the beloved 1990 miniseries starring Tim Curry as Pennywise. Muschietti's version takes on a drastically different tone, but there's no question that his interation of IT is a feat of modern horror. The 2017 movie became popular with viewers that weren't even keen on the genre. IT sees the town of Derry, Maine plagued by grisly murders every 27 years.
5 Christine The premise of King's novel Christine sounds silly on the surface, but the author manages to weave tension and terror through a tale that would fall flat from any other writer. In Christine, nerdy teen Arnie purchases a 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine from its original owner. As Arnie begins working on the car, his appearance and personality change, causing tension in his personal relationships.
