From Psycho II to The Godfather Part III to Gremlins 2: The New Batch, there are plenty of undeservedly hated sequels that need to be shown more love.
From follow-ups to classics to unfairly panned continuations, there are a bunch of unloved movie sequels that don’t deserve the hate. Sequels are always tricky to pull off, because replicating the success of a popular movie requires the filmmakers to catch lightning in a bottle for a second time.
9 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Tobe Hooper took a wild left turn with the 1986 sequel to his classic slasher The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Much like Evil Dead II, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 follows up a gruesome horror movie with a comedic sequel. The Breakfast Club-inspired poster says it all. Naturally, anyone expecting a traditional sequel to Hooper’s Texas-set chiller was disappointed by the sequel’s drastic departure from that style with pitch-black humor and excessive gore.
7 Clerks II Kevin Smith was never going to be able to top the indie movie masterpiece that launched his career, Clerks, with a sequel over a decade later. The first Clerks movie was the work of a young, hungry artist with a lifetime of frustrations to vent. But as far as belated comedy sequels go, Clerks II is pretty great, too. Rather than retreading the original, Clerks II tackles the next stage of Dante and Randal’s lives with the pressures and insecurities of reaching middle age.
5 The Godfather Part III Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is often listed among the greatest films ever made, and The Godfather Part II became the go-to example of a superior sequel. After the historic success of those first two movies, The Godfather Part III was set up to fail. The threequel isn’t a sprawling epic like its two predecessors; it’s more of an epilogue than a grand finale.
