Warner Bros. might not be alive without one dog's help.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT When Warner Bros. was on the brink of collapse 100 years ago, a familiar dog actor was the one credited with saving the company. While Warner Bros. still remains one of the “Big Five” successful American film studios in the 21st century, the company didn’t have an easy start when first becoming incorporated in 1923. Led by major film studio pioneer Jack Warner and his brothers Harry, Albert, and Sam at the time, Warner Bros.
Carla Valderrama’s 2020 non-fiction book This Was Hollywood explains that the studio was facing persistent problems after opening its Sunset Boulevard lot in 1918. According to Jack Warner, they had a continual “lack of money, popular stars, and story ideas.
Rin Tin Tin's Box Office Hit Where The North Begins Saved Warner Bros In 1923 Jack Warner agreed to produce the movie surrounding Rin Tin Tin as its main actor, while signing “Rinty” and his human companion Lee Duncan to a six-month contract of $150 per week. Warner promised the bank loaning to the studio that Where the North Begins would be a box office smash, with the bank electing to take 65% of the film’s gross revenues rather than send Warner Bros. into bankruptcy.
Rin Tin Tin was both a box office smash and a critical success, as critics lauded the canine as a new star. Warner Bros. soon negotiated a deal with Rin Tin Tin and Lee Duncan for a five-year contract with $250 a week and 10% of net profits from their movies, which was a substantial payout for a dog in 1923. Darryl Zanuck, one of the major players in the Hollywood studio system, signed on to write Rin Tin Tin’s next movie, 1924’s Find Your Man.
After departing from Warner Bros., Rin Tin Tin made a few films with Mascot Pictures before appearing on a radio show. Sadly, on August 10, 1932, Rin Tin Rin passed away very suddenly, with headlines around the world breaking the news about the beloved movie star dog’s death. The German Shepherd remains one of the most famous animal actors in Hollywood history today, with his son Rin Tin Tin Jr. and later Rin Tin Tin III having carried on his acting legacy thereafter.
