Batman is one of the most influential heroes of all time, having inspired a host of imitators across the character’s eighty-plus years of continuous publication. With that in mind, it is worth considering which characters influenced the creation of the Dark Knight himself. From the pulp heroes of yesteryear, to near-forgotten works of literature, there are several heroes, and villains, who influenced Batman in some way, shape, or form.
14 Dracula There was always something vampiric about Batman, to the point where the Dark Knight actually fought vampires in his earliest stories. In that way, Dracula had an indelible impact upon the creation of Batman, and the gothic, horror-movie imagery established right from the start in Detective Comics #27.
11 Dr. Syn/The Scarecrow One of literature’s earliest masked heroes, Doctor Syn/The Scarecrow was the subject of Russell Thorndike’s 1915 novel Doctor Syn. The novel tells the story of the Reverend Doctor Christopher Syn, who travels the world and learns various disciplines to seek revenge following a personal tragedy. Eventually, he becomes a pirate, and later, the masked vigilante Scarecrow.
8 The Bat This villainous thief from 1920 play The Bat was later adapted to film twice: 1926’s The Bat and its 1930 remake The Bat Whispers, the latter of which was cited by Bob Kane as another influence in Batman’s creation. Both adaptations contain ideas that would be incorporated into Batman’s world. The 1926 version features the Bat wearing a bat-like mask, as well as a cape similar to the one Finger would give Batman.
5 Doc Savage While he’s primarily cited as prime influence on Superman, there is also much to the character of Doc Savage that would subsequently be adopted by Batman. A wealthy adventurer and inventor, Clark Savage, Jr. trained his mind and body to become the ultimate renaissance man. As a scientist, physician, detective, athlete and inventor, Doc Savage is a master of many disciplines, much like Bruce Wayne would later in his quest to become Batman.
