The top universities allege the report can be harmful to attracting a diverse set of prospective students.
The UC Berkeley School of Law joined the law schools of Harvard University and Yale University last week in cutting ties with U.S. News & World Report's rankings. The top universities will no longer provide data to the publication, alleging the report can be harmful to attracting a diverse set of prospective students.
The Bay Area school made the announcement on Nov. 17, and since then, Stanford Law School, Georgetown University Law Center and Columbia Law School have joined the boycott. The rejection by the schools doesn’t mean the organizations won’t be included in the rankings. U.S. News & World Reportit will rank all fully accredited law schools, even if schools decide not to contribute to its survey.
“There are aspects of the US News rankings that are profoundly inconsistent with our values and public mission,” a statement from Dean Erwin Chemerinsky on the Berkeley Law websiteThe statement outlines specific grievances Chemerinksy and the school have with the way the U.S.
While elite universities have enough prestige to forgo the rankings, other schools often feel pressure to compete, Walter Kimbrough, interim executive director of the Black Men’s Research Institute at Morehouse College, told the Associated Press. They then pursue metrics that may not serve prospective students well.
