The passenger train, en route from New Orleans to Los Angeles, struck an occupied car that was 'obstructing the track' about 12 miles from Houston Station, Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods said in a statement.
An Amtrak train struck a car that was attempting to bypass the railroad's warning system Saturday evening, killing at least two people in northeast Harris County, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.
According to Gonzalez, the crash occurred shortly after 9 p.m. at Beaumont and Van Hut, where the car attempted to cross the tracks as an automatic arm, flashing lights and alarm system activated to indicate the oncoming train. Two victims, a man and a woman, were ejected from the car and died, authorities said. Their identities had not been released as of Saturday evening.
