The last time two tropical storms were in the Gulf of Mexico together was in 1959, and two hurricanes have never appeared there at the same time in recorded history. But forecasts are uncertain, and one or both systems could yet dissipate.
A dozen L.A. Times photographers set out to capture one weekend in this strange season.
Late Friday, it was centered about 210 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. It was headed northwest at 13 mph. “Of course, we have to have two simultaneously land-falling hurricanes,” McNoldy said. “It’s best not to ask what’s next.”
