The AGs note that Facebook is not “immune” to the broader societal issue of racism and bias, and point to statistics finding that 40% of Americans have experienced some kind of online harassment—of which more than three-quarters say they were harassed on Facebook. In addition to taking steps against facilitating hate and discrimination, the letter also asks Facebook to “take more steps to provide redress” for its users who have been victims of harassment.found that Facebook’s policies have had “real world consequences that are serious setbacks for civil rights,” which the AGs say demonstrates that Facebook has “fallen short” of its public commitment to civil rights.
The letter offers suggestions for steps that Facebook can take to improve its policies, including allowing “public, third-party audits of hate content and enforcement,” expanding policies regarding “inflammatory advertisements,” and “aggressively enforc[ing]” the company’s existing policies regarding hate speech, which the officials say “are not enforced quickly and comprehensively enough.
