2022 election: Q&A with Steve Padilla, California State Senate District 18 candidate [Opinion]

There are two candidates on the June 7 ballot in the campaign for state Senate District 18, which stretches from southern San Diego County into Imperial County and includes parts of San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Chula Vista City Council member and California Coastal Commission member Steve Padilla, a Democrat, and CEO/veteran’s advocate Alejandro Galicia, a Republican, are squaring off now and in a Nov. 8 general election.

The state can expand creative ways to educate our youth and prepare our future workforce with real sustainable skills that support emerging green tech and economic demands. A: Many of California’s water policies were created during a period of above-average rainfall early in the last century and need to be revisited. Now that we are experiencing one of the most persistent droughts in California’s recorded history, we have to get serious about long-term water resilience, requiring water-efficient appliances and landscaping in new construction, and expanding local water supplies.

The other major cause is simply the lack of affordable homes. We have to build more housing, and build it now. Locally, I led efforts to build affordable housing for seniors and families in Chula Vista, and, in Sacramento, I would take every opportunity to build more homes, especially in urban cores and around transit hubs. We must ultimately make a serious effort to examine and address the primary drivers and factors that lead to people being unsheltered.

I support our public health officials and science-based guidelines and policies and know that our COVID-19 response saved lives. It’s as important now as it was before to continue education and public outreach on the latest round of boosters, which are really critical for seniors and at-risk adults with preexisting conditions. While we’re not in a full-fledged emergency anymore, we have to take our public health obligations as seriously as ever and help Californians keep their families healthy.
