The history of Tar Heels football has always been dogged by a well-earned"good but not great, but how in the world have they never been great?" reputation. UNC's absence from the national football stage is baffling for a school with endless athletic resources while residing in a talent-rich state. But it never wins conference titles and has a scant few major player awards in its trophy case.

Maye, a second generation UNC QB, has bled Carolina Blue his entire life and chose to return in 2023 despite plenty of opportunities to transfer elsewhere, because he desperately wants to be the player who finally ends 135 years of"What if?" gridiron irritation in Chapel Hill.
