Moise, who is originally from Brochet, Man., but lives in Saskatoon was one of 29 candidates who graduated from the RCMP’s three-week Indigenous Pre-Cadet Training Program , which held a ceremony on Friday at the RCMP Depot Division in Regina. It was the first time the program had taken place since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The RCMP, formerly the North-West Mounted Police, was formed in 1873. Mounties enforced federal rule which included separating Indigenous children from their families as they were forced into residential schools. They tracked down truants, Indigenous children who tried to run away, fined parents who refused to send their kids to the schools and assisted Indian Agents in the forcible removal of Indigenous children from their homes.
The presentation motivated Moise to apply to IPTP, a program aimed at Indigenous people across Canada between the ages of 19 and 29. It’s billed by the RCMP as an opportunity to gain some first-hand experience into what a potential career in policing could look like. Candidates who have completed the program receive ongoing support and guidance as they go through the RCMP’s police officer application process.
Moise sees some of the changes being made in efforts to further reconciliation, such as the presence of knowledge holder Lyndon Linklater, who sang an honour song for the graduates Friday morning.
