Memorial Day is coming up, bringing beach days, barbecues and weekend getaways for many Chicago and Illinois residents.
The number of Illinoisans planning to get away over the holiday weekend is up compared to the last three years, according to a news release from AAA.Over 2 million Illinois residents are expected to travel at least 50 miles by car, plane or other means of transportation this weekend, a number just shy of 2019's all-time record for Memorial Day Weekend travel, the release stated.Of the 2 million Illinoisans traveling, over 1.8 million plan to travel by car, the release stated.

The aviation department release called Memorial Day weekend the "start of summer travel season," and advised travelers to take measures to avoid traffic and congestion at the airports. The release recommended travelers use public transit if they can and to take advantage of cellphone lots and drop-off points if they drive.
