Drivers with certain conditions could receive huge fines if they don’t make the DVLA aware of their disorder
Certain disorders like vision problems clearly affect driving and must not be hidden from the DVLA. However, a number of other conditions may also impact how a person behaves on the road and not making the department aware of it can lead to hefty fines.
Narcolepsy has often been portrayed in popular media for its symptom which sees sufferers experience uncontrollable episodes where they simply fall asleep sometimes without much warning. This can be dangerous if a driver were to experience an episode behind the wheel and while it won’t disallow someone from driving they do need to alert the DVLA to their condition.
One unsuspecting condition that also needs to be flagged to the DVLA is sleep apnoea. This sleep disorder sees a person’s breathing being interrupted or stopping completely during their sleep which can trigger brief awakenings throughout the night. While sleep apnoea isn’t likely to strike during driving, it can cause excessive sleepiness and difficulty concentrating due to the interrupted sleep pattern.
