The action movie The Mummy could have been a completely different movie as it was almost directed by three different horror directors.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The 1999 adventure film The Mummy was almost made by three different horror directors, who would have made completely different movies. The 1932 horror classic The Mummy, directed by Karl Freund and starring Boris Karloff, got a “remake” in the late 1990s, but with a completely different story. The Mummy kept Imhotep as the antagonist but introduced adventurer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan as protagonists.

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, The Mummy was a box office hit, allowing it to expand with two sequels – The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor – and making way for a spinoff prequel series. The Mummy has gathered a loyal following, who praise its action, visual effects, and performances, but had the project gone as originally planned, The Mummy could have been directed by an iconic horror director, thus making it a completely different movie.George A.

Joe Dante was brought on board after Barker’s exit, and he increased the budget as he wanted Daniel Day-Lewis to play the Mummy. After the script was rewritten by John Sayles, the project came very close to being made, and it would have had some horror elements like flesh-eating scarabs, but in the end, Universal refused to move forward due to the higher budget.

In October 1994, Romero finished a draft co-written with Alan Ormsby and John Sayles, in which a female archaeologist named Helen Grover would have found the tomb of Imhotep, with Helen being drawn into a tentative relationship with him. However, Romero’s script was found to be too dark and violent, and as he couldn’t free himself from a contract with MGM, he officially left The Mummy.

How 1999’s The Mummy Changed With Stephen Sommers As Director In 1997, Stephen Sommers called producers James Jacks and Sean Daniel to share his vision for The Mummy, which was completely different from what previous directors had been working on. Sommers proposed a movie “kind of Indiana Jones or Jason and the Argonauts with the mummy as the creature giving the hero a hard time”.
