Rangers and their under fire manager got safely out of McDiarmid Park and that small victory will be enough to keep the blood lust in check for the time being.

It'll take a whole lot more than an unremarkable win at St Johnstone to turn them into Beale-ievers again.

That claim, which emerged from south of the Border, will also have come as a nasty surprise to chairman John Bennett – who has worked so hard to pull his club together into some sort of alignment since taking over from Douglas Park at the head of the Blue Room. It’s difficult not to arrive at one of three conclusions:

He has backed Beale unflinchingly and provided the manager with significant funds to oversee the summer rebuild which continues to look worryingly like a downgrade on what was there before. But, having done so, Bennett is almost obliged to give Beale a bit of breathing space to get his team in order, despite a fairly tumultuous and unconvincing start to the new campaign. What neither of these men need is to worry about who is saying what and to whom the moment their backs are turned.

Yes, Rangers dominated proceedings in Perth on Saturday lunchtime but, even so, the performance was a long way short of what Beale would have been hoping for after two weeks on the training ground. Despite the patience Bennett is affording his manager, the fact remains that Beale appears not to have the first idea as to what his strongest starting line-up actually looks like. And that has to be a cause for considerable concern even though the Londoner’s job is safe, at least for the time being albeit on a game by game basis.

And yet now Matondo appears to be one of his key contributors and, having taken his goal so tidily at the weekend, it’s not inconceivable that he might replace Lammers in Beale’s next starting XI when Real Betis arrive at Ibrox on Thursday night for the opening night of the Europa League.
