Greg Abbott stuck to a familiar script for his State of the State address by touting conservative themes that have been political winners for him, but offered few bold initiatives beyond his comfort zone.
Republican lawmakers will try to push through school choice legislation that will allow public school students to use tax dollars to attend private schools. In previous sessions, school choice, which Abbott is trying to achieve by what he’s calling a “state funded education savings accounts,” has been unsuccessful in passing the Legislature because of opposition from rural school districts.
Abbott also dished a helping of red meat, asking lawmakers to ban all future vaccine and mask mandates. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, he was criticized by some conservatives for implementing a mask mandate. He overwhelmingly won the 2022 GOP primary for governor.that could include using $15 billion of the state’s nearly $33 billion surplus.
