1. Global wealth inequality translates into global pollution inequality
and demand wealthier countries make more radical changes, studies like the World Inequality Report reveal the extent to which wealth and resource consolidation — both as a country and per individual — correlate with dramatically more pollution and carbon emissions. The impacts of worsening environmental conditions are already being felt more acutely by the world’s poorest communities.
“Climate change is going to increase global inequalities because poor countries are more impacted,” says Chancel. “Within rich countries, poor people are also more impacted by climate change than wealthy individuals.” According to the report, the wealthiest 10% of the population in North America emits 73 metric tons of CO2 per person, per year — nearly double the next-highest CO2-emitting group . Even the poorest 50% of the population in North America stands out, producing more per capita carbon emissions than the per capita emissions of the poorest 50% in East Asia, South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East and North African regions combined.
Though they still contribute a disproportionate amount of carbon emissions, the bottom 50% of most wealthy countries — the U.S. included — have technically already met the, according to the report. This suggests that federal policies to reduce emissions should focus primarily on the world’s richest since they remain the highest carbon emitters on the planet. The wealthiest 10% contribute nearly half of the planet’s total carbon emissions at 47.
