As lawmakers continue to negotiate the next stimulus package, there are 3 things we can expect to see in the bill. Here's what you need to know:
The HEALS Act would provide the same stimulus check benefit as the CARES Act, passed in March. Single filers with an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less would receive a $1,200 stimulus check, while joint filers earning up to $125,000 annually would receive $2,400. Payments would be reduced $5 per $100 of income above the limits. Recipients would receive $500 for each dependent, with no age limit.
The friction between the parties lies not in the benefit itself, but the amount the benefit should be. GOP representatives, including Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, don’t want unemployment benefits to exceed what a worker made before their job loss. Democrats favor extending the $600 per week unemployment compensation provided by the CARES Act that expired at the end of July through January 2021 for most workers. It would extend through March 2021 for gig workers, independent contractors, part-time workers and the self-employed. Both parties agree that measures must be taken to keep potentially millions of Americans from being evicted from their homes.
