36 notorious criminals jailed in the UK in February

An 'evil' rapist police officer who carried out brutal sex attacks on a dozen victims and a woman obsessed with true crime documentaries who stabbed her on-off partner to death were just two of the worst offenders sent to jail in the UK last month.

These are some of the most shocking court cases that have been widely reported in the UK in recent weeks. Carrick’s crimes were all carried out while he was a serving police officer. He passed vetting checks to guard sites including embassies and the Houses of Parliament and completed training courses, including one on domestic abuse in 2005. The Met was forced to apologise and admit Carrick should have been rooted out earlier after it emerged he came to police attention over nine separate incidents between 2000 and 2021 – and was known to colleagues as “Bastard Dave”.

Mr Justice Wall jailed ex-RAF serviceman Smith to 13 years and two months. The senior judge said Smith began stealing secrets “by stealth” from the embassy at night in 2018 and had continued until his arrest in 2021. During the trial it was said that Groves stabbed Mr Fitzgerald after discovering that he had been messaging a 13-year-old girl on Facebook. However, the court heard that Frankie had blocked her as soon as she had said she was 13 and that the girl was actually 17.

The judge had told how Al-Jundi had been described by another woman he had tricked as a Walter Mitty character. He said: “From the time you were first put in touch with Louise Kam earlier in 2021, Al-Jundi you told her lie after lie. You claimed to be a person of means with the backing of a multi-millionaire girlfriend who was going to fund the acquisition of her properties at a level in excess of the market value, so that Louise could provide homes for her two sons and you take your share.

Lee Peacock A “jealous” boyfriend who slit the throats of his partner and an associate with a Stanley knife is likely to die in prison after being jailed for life with a minimum term of 39 years. Lee Peacock, 50, killed his girlfriend of 10 years Sharon Pickles, 46, and Clinton Ashmore, 59, during a two-day violence spree through Westminster in August 2021 within weeks of being released from jail.

Mr Justice Murray said Peacock killed Ms Pickles “suddenly” and she was “taken by surprise” after supporting him through his “ups and downs with drug abuse and crime” for 10 years. The following day, Peacock began to hunt for a woman who claimed he believed was part of a group of drug dealers, and a man known as “Skrilla” who he suspected of having a sexual relationship with Ms Pickles.

The woman had vowed to give the multimillion-pound sum to an air ambulance charity in 2014 and left £25,000 to Pearman, who she had appointed as one of the main executors of her will. After she died on August 7 2016, he showed the letter to solicitors who became suspicious and began an investigation. It emerged he had written the letter of wishes shortly before the woman died, and her GP said she did not have mental capacity when the letter was said to have been signed by her.

She even stole £520,000 from her own mother, Susan Colman – following the death of her father in 2015 – after stealing her financial identity, raiding her bank account and covering her tracks by diverting her 64-year-old mother’s mail. And to deflect blame when customers complained, she pretended to have cancer, convincing even her closest relatives.

To con her customers, Barlow falsely claimed she was Atol and Abta protected and quickly built up her business online and via word of mouth. But when victims started to see their holidays fall through, they were left out of pocket or even stranded abroad if she had not booked a return flight. People shared their experience on Facebook and soon Durham Police were being swamped by calls relating to Lyne Barlow Independent Travel.

Detective Chief Inspector Graham Smith said in almost 30 years of policing “the depravity shown by Andrew Innes was beyond anything” he or colleagues had seen before. “Not only did he callously take the lives of a young mother and an innocent child, he then set out to escape justice by burying their bodies beneath his kitchen floor,” he said.

Mrs Cavendish said she was “in the early stages of pregnancy” at the time of the robbery, and a time when she “should have been happy and excited was then transformed into a period of stress and worry”. She told the trial she covered her three-year-old child, who was in a bed with her, with a duvet so that they could not see what was happening. Two Richard Mille watches, valued at £400,000 and £300,000, were among the items taken in the raid.

She told the court she ran back to the bedroom shouting “get back” or “get in” to her husband, who was unable to activate a panic alarm. Mrs Cavendish said one of the intruders “dragged” Cavendish “from his feet and started punching him”.

But he was convicted of an offence of fraud after emailing Ipsa in February 2020, falsely claiming the police investigation into him had been completed and he was entitled to be paid the two invoices relating to Arnold, which totalled £4,650. Prosecutors said the total value of the fraud was about £52,000, including Mr Woodliff’s proposed salary of £28,000.

Judge Lodder sentenced Grigg to four years in jail for inflicting “10 minutes of terror” on Ms Rabinowitz, followed by two years on licence. “Ten minutes with duct tape over your mouth without knowing what’s going to happen to you must feel like an eternity,” he said. Prosecutors said he “took his frustration out on the only person available – his mother.” Constant, from Enfield, north London, and his mother had a “very troubled relationship”, with a “history of violence and abuse by the defendant against her”, it was said. He was sentenced to life with a minimum term of nine years and four months at the Old Bailey, having pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Vig, 54, was jailed for life at the Old Bailey with a minimum term of 18 years. Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley, from Scotland Yard, said: “The actions of Deekan Paul Singh Vig have left his family devastated – they must continue to deal with the loss of a loved one while he will spend a significant period of time in jail as a consequence of his actions.”

Keenan Ridgway A predator who recorded himself sexually abusing a young child before sharing the footage worldwide was jailed after being caught by an international investigation. Twenty-one-year-old Keenan Ridgway also took 318 images of him abusing his victim on two separate occasions in Lincolnshire, starting in 2018, which were also shared online.

When the NCA later gained access to Ridgway’s iPhone, they found he had an account on a website which allowed paedophiles to trade and distribute indecent images, with a further 42 images of his victim and 355 other indecent photos and videos found in various folders and caches, including of children being raped. Mr Eager said: “These images are now on the dark web. There is no way in which any authority can retrieve them.

Judge Robert Egbuna told Derby Crown Court that Madaweni, 30, had refused to attend his sentencing hearing out of “some form of protest” but said that the defendant “seemed happy” for it to proceed in his absence. Labelling the murder as a “callous and brutal act”, Judge Egbuna said: “You adopted a boxer’s stance to generate as much speed and power as one could, and struck downward toward Billy Pearson’s head.

Phillip Andrew Williams A man abducted a schoolgirl and forced her to take cocaine before raping her in a field in a rural Mid Wales town. Phillip Andrew Williams, 48, of Llandovery, Carmarthenshire, stole the child’s mobile phone, tied her hands together and held a screwdriver to her neck throughout the 12-hour planned attack that took place last summer.

Williams denied all of the allegations against him and was tried by a jury who unanimously found him guilty of all the charges. A judge sentenced him to 22 years in prison, extended for eight years on licence. Ms Girolami was last seen on August 19 2021, when she travelled from her north London home, for a day out at Leigh-on-Sea, in Essex. Following her disappearance, Kaygusuz pretended to her friends that she was alive and well. Some 15 months after she went missing, Ms Girolami’s remains were found hidden “in plain sight” in a grave in St James’s Churchyard in Barnet.

The court heard the men were shouting “give me the car keys” and later searched through kitchen cupboards before fleeing the scene. Sarah Jones KC, prosecuting, told jurors that Carty was in debt to Mr Oleh for drugs. Michal Kopaniarz A lorry driver ploughed into a broken-down car killing three people moments after watching a seven-minute Ladbible video and while typing on a sat-nav app on his mobile phone. University graduate Alex Britton, 28, food delivery driver Tina Ince, 58, and recovery driver Tom Watson, 30, died of “catastrophic injuries”.

He was about to winch the Astra on to his recovery vehicle when the defendant’s HGV, travelling at 56mph, ploughed into the rear of the food van which had its hazard lights on. This shunted the Mercedes into the Astra killing the three victims who were stood between the vehicles, Mr Jones said. She attacked her 59-year-old victim at an address in Rothesay Mead, Hereford, on Sunday, July 3 last year. Smith, of Waterfield Road, Hereford, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was sentenced to 12 years behind bars.

Liverpool Crown Court heard how Hyusein put his arm around his victim and placed his hand down her back as she walked along Orford Lane in Warrington. The victim pushed him away and told him "no". However, Hyusein continued his attack, putting his hand down her trousers and touching her inappropriately.

Sibanda knifed the 18-year-old after Mr Ahmed, known to friends as Abdi, had thrown a punch at him. Earlier that afternoon Abdi had called his older brother, 19-year-old Faisal Ahmed, after he'd been punched by a 15-year-old boy. David Shaw A former GP and paediatrician was caught with one of the largest hauls of child sexual abuse images the NCA has ever seen - more than 1.2 million. David Shaw, 48, from Somerset, used anonymisation techniques on a peer-to-peer sharing network to download indecent images of children.
