The variant has been detected in the UK
The Pirola Covid variant has now been confirmed in the UK as the number of patients with the virus begins to increase. As cases do begin to rise, people are urged to be aware of the symptoms of the new variant, which is described as 'highly mutated'.
The variant BA.2.86 was first identified last month via a PCR test, according to Public Health Scotland . Since then it's been discovered in a number of different countries, and is able to rapidly mutate with more and more cases appearing in the UK. He added: “Therefore, it's too early to definitively identify any unique tell-tale signs of this variant." The flu and Covid-19 vaccine programme was brought forward by a month due to the discovery of the Pirola strain which NHS officials said represents the most concerning new variant since Omicron first emerged. The Department of Health and Social Care announced that vaccinations would start on September 11 following advice from the UKHSA. It was due to start in October.
Dr Papadopoulos said Pirola could “potentially be more transmissible and severe” compared with the previous dominant variant.
