Very few NFL quarterbacks are known to have ever had the surgery, where a new tendon is used to rebuild a ligament in the elbow. Former Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme had the surgery in 2007 and bounced back to finish second in AP Comeback Player of the Year voting the next season.
With NFL training camps usually starting in late July, Purdy would essentially be out for the entire offseason. It would be familiar territory for the 49ers, as Jimmy Garoppolo had shoulder surgery last March. Garoppolo is now scheduled to be a free agent, leaving Trey Lance as the team's healthiest quarterback. But even Lance's status is in flux.
