After the 49ers quarterback catastrophe in the NFC Championship Game loss at Philadelphia, NFL teams will be allowed to dress a third quarterback without losing a roster spot on game days.
on Jan. 29 to the Philadelphia Eagles, the 49ers had a quarterback catastrophe. They did not have a third quarterback to dress, however. Jimmy Garoppolo was ruled out two days earlier, as he’d yet to practice since breaking his foot Dec. 4. Also, the 49ers waived Jacob Eason from their practice squad Jan. 3, prior to the regular-season finale.
Not surprisingly, both coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch spoke out in favor of a third-quarterback bylaw when asked about it on Feb. 2, fresh off the season-ending loss. Added Lynch: “I think it’d be good for football, you’re always trying to develop these guys, but you’re always weighing that carrying three as opposed to the roster value of being able to host a full complement of position players at different positions. If the league just kind of gave you an out there, everybody would be forced to do it. You have more people in camps improving, I think it’d be good for football.
