Gimli was reduced to the role of comedic relief in Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies, but the details of Tolkien's books tell a different story.
The Lord of the Rings movies left out several details about Gimli's character, ultimately making him a shadow of his book counterpart. The dwarf was treated as more of a comic relief character in Peter Jackson's movie trilogy, to the point that it is difficult to take him seriously. This is only further exacerbated by Gimli's proximity to Aragorn and Legolas, whose serious and intelligent demeanor contrasted with Gimli's ludicrousness.
In the case of the Dwarves, Sauron had sent an emissary to the people under the Lonely Mountain. In the past, the Dwarves had been under the Dark Lord's control, and he hoped to bring them back into the fold. However, King Dáin was loyal to Elrond, so immediately after the dark emissary left, he sent Gimli and his father, Glóin, to Rivendell to tell the elf lord what had happened.
This wasn't the case in the Lord of the Rings books. Legolas and Gimli were just as competitive in J.R.R. Tolkien's works as in Peter Jackson's movies, but it was always apparent in the former that they were as close to evenly matched as they could be. This is part of where their respect for one another came in. Gimli may have been hot-headed and ready to voice his opinion , but he was no less intelligent or powerful than Legolas. He was, all on his own, a force to be reckoned with.
Of course, the movies see the evolution of Gimli and Legolas' relationship, but the standard theatrical cut left out the dwarf's big moment in Lothlórien. Gimli had been afraid to enter the mysterious kingdom, and when he did, the people there treated him with mistrust. However, the second the dwarf saw Galadriel, everything changed. He regarded her as the most beautiful being he had ever seen, and his love for her shifted everyone's expectations.
