Many people insist that there are rules for grieving, from what we grieve to how long we grieve. Here's why they're wrong.
1. The loss happened 20 years ago.
Grievers are often given a socially sanctioned timeline for their grief. Immediately following a death, mourners feel entitled to the full range of emotions and experiences. Religious,, cultural, and familial rituals mark the death and communities gather to celebrate, mourn, and pay homage. As time passes, however, individuals may be expected to “move on” and not speak about their loss. But grief does not exist on a set schedule and does not progress linearly.
