Many of the former British Council teachers are trapped in a hotel in Islamabad and are unable to leave
The UK Government, however, has been unable to provide them with accommodation or has given no clear timeline for when they could be relocated.
Children of the former teachers have not attended school in up to two years and are facing the threat of hunger and disease due to their parents’ lack of income. The Government initially opened 1,500 places under the scheme but, according to Home Office statistics, only 14 Afghans have arrived in the UK the pathway as of March 2023, of which eight are living in temporary accommodation.
Labour’s shadow foreign minister Fabian Hamilton said it was “shameful” that the Government had left so many former British Council workers in “such a perilous position”.
