560,000 vulnerable households with prepayment meters had their energy supply cut off in the past year, theipaper can reveal ⬇️ Citizens Advice is demanding that Ofgem compels energy companies to review all recent forced prepayment meter installations
and force-fit the meters.
Ofgem’s CEO, Jonathan Brearley, has said “the rules and regulations are clear that installing forced prepayment meters should only be done as a last resort and only where it is safe and practicable to do so”. “However, I’m telling suppliers not to wait for the outcome of our reviews and to act now to check that prepayment meters have been installed appropriately, and if rules have been broken, offer customers a reversal of installations and compensation payments where appropriate. There will also be fines issued from Ofgem if the issue is found to be systemic.”
Ms Cooper added: “Our evidence also shows that suppliers haven’t been doing enough to check it’s safe for all their customers with a prepayment meter to remain on one. We must see companies commit to contacting their customers to check they are safe, and provide compensation if they’ve forced people onto a prepayment meter when it’s not.
“Extending the temporary ban on forced installations beyond 31 March, and making suppliers review existing forced installations will ensure consumers remain protected, now and in the future.”
