Tens of thousands evacuated, 50K structures threatened
“I’ve lived here for 30 years, never had to evacuate before,” resident Tim Lukehart said. “There’s been fires of course, but not like this one.” In addition, nearly 50,000 people were ordered to evacuate in Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties, as higher wind gusts challenged overnight firefight. Many were sparked by an unprecedented lightning siege of nearly 12,000 strikes over several days, as a high-pressure area over the West brought a dangerous mix of triple-digit heat and monsoonal moisture pulled from the south.
