Young people have always been at the front of major political change. As more students organize, lead, and join protests, it’s becoming harder for political candidates to ignore the voices of their younger would-be constituents.
While much of the 2020 politics discourse surrounds the presidential race, Litman recommends focusing your volunteer efforts at the local level, if you can. “We’re trying to get people to think about this as, ‘Where is the place where your voice can have the biggest value-add? Where can you be the most heard?’” she says of Run for Something, which supports progressive candidates' stage campaigns at all levels of government.

According to Bar Kolodny, Rise Pennsylvania’s state director, organizing often begins with immediate connections before ripple effects can reach strangers. “Rather than reaching out to random people, it’s about talking to people we know and bringing our communities with us as we’re organizing to make change,” she says.
“You are the best possible messenger; you are the political influencer for your friends and family. It goes a long way,” she says. “Thinking about it in that sense — that you're an influencer about politics [for] the network that you reach — can feel really empowering and really fun.”All of the organizers who spoke withstress that their work won’t be over in early November, no matter who is elected to office.
