ON THIS DAY: In 1945, during World War II, the U.S. B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb code-named “Little Boy” on Hiroshima, Japan, resulting in an estimated 140,000 deaths.

+On Aug. 6, 1945, the Enola Gay, an American B-52 bomber, dropped the first of two atomic bombs used in WWII on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. Three days later, the U.S. dropped the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki to force Japan to surrender. An estimated 140,000 people died from the bombing of Hiroshima, not including those who died in the years afterwards due to cancer and other effects.
