‘s Jenelle Riley in the Variety Streaming Room to discuss the show’s importance, guests and future plans. Thede is also the creator and executive producer, while Black is a writer for the show. “A Black Lady Sketch Show” recently earned three Emmy nominations for variety sketch series, directing for a variety series and guest actress in a comedy series.
The show’s powerful representation for Black women extends into the world of comedy, which Davis said is a new realm for her directorial work. “I’ve been on another sketch series but as the one singular Black girl,” Dennis said. “And you’re vying for that opportunity, you’re vying for that moment, but here the moments just keep coming. There are no moments that aren’t beautiful and that you can’t just dive into.”
“I can write four Black women as main characters in a sketch together,” Black said. “And some of them can be amazing characters, and some of them could be the worst person you’ve ever seen on earth, and none of them are the representation of Black women ’cause we’re going to represent hundreds over the course of this season.”
