Unlike some restaurant owners who are closing based on residual effects of the coronavirus pandemic, SynDee Bergen and Wendy Thompson are controlling their future and have decided to retire, Bergen said.
The owners had announced via social media that the shop, at 1836 W. 25th Street in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood, is for sale.. “We’re just kind of rolling the dice and I guess going for new adventures and taking a big leap of faith, of course. We may regret it, but we’re just going to see what the future holds. If Covid has taught us anything, it’s go ahead and take those adventures, you never know.
At one time or another, since its inception in 2008, A Cookie and A Cupcake has had a presence in Tremont and South Euclid as well as Ohio City. The Ohio City location was adjacent to the former Bad Tom Smith Brewing, which closed in 2021. “It’s been a long time, and on a personal note we are looking forward to seeing friends and getting those weekends back and spending time with family,” Bergen said. “I have a daughter and watching her grow up would be nice, to be more involved. Because it is every weekend and every night and honestly, it is 24-7.”
Bergen said over the years the customer-demand shift initially focused heavily on cupcakes, but it changed to custom cakes. Now sales are about equal between custom work and retail sales, she said.“My partner and I have both made promises that we will avoid the passion of needing to bake for everybody, because we want to. We need to give ourselves a chance to explore.”“We loved the life,” Bergen said, “but sometimes the brain just shifts and you need a new adventure.”• Final-day hours will 11 a.
