Record inflation has made many people stretch their dollars — especially those on a fixed income.CLEVELAND, Ohio — Inflation has been at all-time highs, so much so that historic wage growth for many people is all but canceled out. But for some seniors on a fixed income, the issue has been much worse.
“So, it’s Social Security that they’re living on,” Brooks said. “And that makes it harder to make ends meet in today’s world.”The most recent numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics say inflation was at 8.3% year over year in April. In March it was at 8.5%, the highest since 1981. With the housing market soaring over the past few years, rents have gone up and so have property taxes, Thomas said. He said the Agency on Aging does refer seniors to a lot of services, including affordable housing.United Way getting more calls for help
Further breakouts of the data show increased calls for utility assistance and food assistance in the first four months of 2022. She said United Way is able to navigate anyone who calls, including seniors, to the right services. For someone with barriers, like lack of technology or limited cellphone minutes, it can make the process much simpler, Snowden said.
One thing the Agency on Aging looks a lot at is social determinants of health, or put more simply, how people’s living situation can make them prone to getting sick easier.
