David Wilder spoke to The Athletic about his involvement in a bonus-skimming scandal and his time with the White Sox organization.
No. A lot of my memories have not been positive, because Kenny and Jerry made it known that anyone who reached out to me in the organization would be fired.I was everything wrong with what happened, but I never went and buried the other guys in Latin America or the other guys who knew what was going on. For some reason, won’t say anything to my face. I was at Cal with Dusty years ago watching Dusty’s son, and he came over to say hello to Dusty.
The culture starts with the owner. Not many people know that every time Kenny had to do something he had to go into Jerry’s office and ask permission. He sat in on everything. And if he didnt, every meeting they’d take notes and give it to Jerry. Minor league coaches, every Latin or Black coach I wanted to bring in, Jerry would — if they weren’t from the White Sox — usually not be interested. In any business you have, if you have someone who has been successful, I want their ideas.
I did two years for it. Yeah, it was wrong. I took money, but it wasn’t $400,000 — it was, maybe $175,000 personally over a couple years. I considered it the World Series bonus I never got. People may say, ‘Oh, sour grapes.’ But if you’re in your job and doing a great job and working hard and then you don’t get a bonus when they win? I never told on anybody , I took my time. But all the people who were friends with me, media, people on TV, I never got a call from those people.
Was realizing you were done in the sport your low point? Or was there another point where, mentally, you were just in a bad spot?
