Kamalpreet Singh, 30, allegedly confessed to the killing of 32-year-old Anthony Garza, but implicated his boss as the man who really wanted the victim dead.
DUBLIN — A Fremont man who allegedly confessed to a 2020 fatal shooting is innocent, his attorney claims, because he was “taking the fall” for his employer.
But in his opening statement Monday, defense attorney Ernie Castillo told jurors that his client, “did not commit this offense,” and that the real culprit was Singh’s employer at an area trucking company. Singh was arrested in September 2020, five months after he allegedly shot and killed Garza at the Mowry East Shopping Center in Fremont. After his arrest, Singh allegedly not only told police, “I killed a human” but named his employer as the person who put him up to it, prosecutors wrote in court records. And a police probable cause statement says Singh admitted he and Garza had fought a year before.
