With their latest album, this band have come back to those unmistakable melodies

You might not have the highest hopes for a band formed on Craigslist - North America’s equivalent of Gumtree - but Montreal indie rockers Half Moon Run have come a long way since 2009.

Making it wasn’t easy though. The band’s fourth member, multi-instrumentalist Isaac Symonds, left the band in 2020 to move to Western Canada. There was also the pandemic to contend with too. Opening with ‘You Can Let Go’, the first track from the new album, it’s hurried and dark, but the chorus cuts through as hands raise in the audience - Portielje’s sublime high notes absolve the audience of that palpable anxiety.

To the crowd's delight, the set progresses with a smattering of tracks from album two and three - ‘Narrow Margins’ from 2015’s 'Sun Leads Me On' and the more recent ‘Razorblade’ descending into the first proper crowd singalong. It’s clear they have a very loyal fanbase in the house tonight and it won’t be long before that sustained allegiance will be rewarded again.

From euphoric dancing to tears, the heartbreaking 'Grow Into Love' by the 2020 EP Seasons of Change begins. Full of beautiful harmonies and harmonica, it prompts people to clutch the hand of their loved one - after all it is a song full of complexities and contradictions about love.
