The Matrix Reloaded's 'Burly Brawl' is infamous for its cartoony CGI effects, but there could be an in-universe explanation for its look.
The Matrix Reloaded's "Burly Brawl" features some infamously cartoonish CGI, but a genius fan theory may explain why that is. It's almost hard to recall just how strong the hype was for Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions before their 2003 arrival. The original had been a shock hit and redefined action movies for a new generation.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The Matrix Reloaded trailers were sprinkled with snippets of its freeway chase and the "Burly Brawl," where Keanu Reeves' Neo fights off dozens of attacking Agent Smith copies. What looked impressive in a teaser didn't quite translate to the final version. While the live-action portions of this Matrix Reloaded bout are genuinely thrilling, there reaches a point where Neo and the Agent Smith clones turn into rubbery CG men.
In essence, having hundreds of Agent Smiths and The One having an epic brawl caused rendering problems within this cycle of the Matrix itself, causing the quality to drop substantially. Obviously, that wasn't the intent of the filmmakers and is purely down to the limits of the tech available at the time.
Reloaded's Burly Brawl Was A Major Selling Point The action and special effects in 1999's The Matrix were groundbreaking for their time, so it stands to reason Reloaded had to raise the bar. The freeway car chase and the "Burly Brawl" were the result, and as mentioned previously, trailers for The Matrix Reloaded focused heavily on these sequences.
