Two San Francisco bookstores are slated to close in 2023. Despite online sales, one owner said it's still not enough to stay afloat.
Loyal customers who used to work nearby are now scattered all across the United States, Stuppin said, and though they place orders through Alexander’s online shop, it’s still not enough to keep the independent bookstore open.
“I don’t know what needs to happen, but I know there needs to be more people downtown because it’s just not sustainable as it is,” she said, describing the closure as “a gut punch.”Earlier this month, The Magazine, a 50-year-old gay bookstore in the Tenderloin specializing in"ephemera and erotica,"that it plans to shut down in 2023. For decades, the charming, amber-lit storefront sold media from gay vintage erotica to used VHS tapes.
“Robert Mainardi and Trent Dunphy, the owners, want to thank the community and our loyal customers for years of support,” organizers wrote in a March Instagram post. “It seems to us that print media has lost it’s edge in our current culture.” The Magazine did not immediately respond to SFGATE’s request for comment or confirm when it plans to shutter.
