I’ve stayed up all night to watch the Oscars almost every year for over two decades – and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Here’s why.
I don’t remember exactly when I became obsessed with the Oscars, but it was around the age of eight or nine. My parents loved classic, black-and-white Hollywood movies from the ’40s and ’50s, and I grew up watching them, but I never had any conception of what awards season was. Then came Chicago, Rob Marshall’s 2002 musical romp starring Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones, a film I loved – and I heard that it’d received a whopping 13 Oscar nominations.
I leaped out of my chair when Jane Fonda, envelope in hand, smiled and gave the audience a significant look before making the announcement. On my cab ride home from the office at 6am, as the sun was coming up, I still couldn’t stop grinning. That win was a sign of the changing nature of the Academy – following efforts to broaden and diversify its membership, it had become decidedly more international and open-minded.
