When the priest Don Andrea Conocchia began distributing food and medical supplies out in front of his church one day in winter 2020, a strange thing happened. Just like on the day before and, indeed, throughout the entire week, a crowd of people was lined up – 300, perhaps 400 of them.
The Catholic Church does not exactly have a reputation for tolerance. It is much better known for its strict sexual morals, its discriminatory attitudes to sexual minorities and its numerous disparaging comments about people who don’t live in accordance with the church’s traditional family values. In recent months, Francis has hit the headlines twice for using homophobic slurs.
Conocchia recalls that he visited Paola and her three friends at their home not long later. He was surprised that they hadn’t yet written a letter to Francis and he handed them pens and paper."They started crying,” he says."Don Andrea, we can’t tell the Holy Father that we are prostitutes and how we live,” they told him."I used to have 15 to 18 clients each day, one after the other,” one of them admitted in tears.
When she was 18, she had had enough."In Colombia, they simply kill people like me. Gay and trans people are shot dead on the street. I came to Italy to save my life.” Conocchia wrote the prefect an email describing the financial difficulties facing the transsexuals."The answer arrived 30 seconds later,” he says."No problem, Andrea,” the cardinal wrote. As soon as the written requests for help arrived, he would provide his assistance. After that, Conocchia began sending letters to the Vatican every week, and money would be sent back to his parish just as often – between 200 and 500 euros per person, which he would then distribute to the prostitutes.
But how should he convince the pope to meet with Paola, Consuelo and the others? He called an old acquaintance of his, Sister Geneviève Jeanningros, in the neighboring village of Ostia."Geneviève,” he said to her,"you are the key to the heart of Pope Francis.”
