A new 15 mph speed limit near L.A. schools will apply when students walk to and from school. Will drivers follow it?

In the San Fernando Valley, the high injury network includes sections of the major thoroughfares of Sherman Way, Ventura Blvd., Sepulveda Blvd., Van Nuys Blvd., Vineland Ave., Vanowen St. and Laurel Canyon Blvd., among others.“Our school communities have seen an increase in pedestrian accidents, and it is important to pursue all options to make routes to and from school as safe as possible,” Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said in a statement.

“I am glad to see the City Council adopt this latest traffic safety recommendation among the measures I’ve long been advocating for to keep our kids and families safe,” said LAUSD Boardmember Nick Melvoin, whose district includes Hancock Park. “We will continue to support the implementation of these new measures and collaborate wherever we can to help prevent future traffic accidents around our school communities.

Beeber, who is also director of policy and research for the National Motorists Association, says the problem is twofold. First, most drivers aren’t aware of the specific hours during which school speed zones are in effect, and second, drivers often fail even to notice the school speed zone signs.
