Since the NCAA Tournament expanded in 1985, No. 1 seeds are 147-1 in the opening round. Most, predictably, have won in lopsided fashion, with only eight 1-versus-16 matchups since 2000 decided by 10 points or less, according to the NCAA. The four No. 1 seeds in last year’s tournament won their openers by an average of 25 points.
“Everybody searches for that No. 1 seed, and once they get it, that one seed is a target,” UH point guard Jamal Shead said. “We were pretty amped when we played Arizona last season and they were a one seed. Everybody is going to have that target when they have that 1 next to their name.”
