Three-time World Series champion Vida Blue died Saturday night at age 73. Blue helped Oakland capture three consecutive World Series titles in 1972, ’73 and ’74 while also winning a Cy Young in 1971.
Blue spent the first nine seasons of his MLB career with the A’s, who drafted him in 1967 when the franchise was still located in Kansas City. The team relocated to Oakland a year later, and Blue made his major-league debut in July 1969.
As a key member of the A’s, Blue helped the club capture three consecutive World Series titles in 1972, ’73 and ’74.. “We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this arduous time.” Blue retired in 1986 with a career 3.27 ERA, 2,175 strikeouts and 37 shutouts in 502 appearances.
