Daily Defense w/ jamiejmcintyre 🇺🇸 The Blame Game — The Biden administration’s report on the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan laid most of the blame for the rapid defeat of Afghan forces and chaotic evacuation on Trump's failure to plan.

THE BLAME GAME: The 12-page unclassified summary of the Biden administration’s after action report on the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan laid most of the blame for the rapid defeat of Afghan forces and the resultant need for a chaotic 17-day evacuation on the Trump administration's failure to plan.

“This effort isn't about accountability today, it's about understanding,” said Kirby, who disputed that the withdrawal was chaotic and said he was proud of the performance of the U.S. military as it carried out a difficult mission. “We had every assurance made by President Ghani that he wasn't going anywhere, that he was still in charge, that he still had a viable administration,” Kirby said. “No agency predicted a Taliban takeover in nine days. No agency predicted the rapid fleeing of President Ghani, who had indicated to us his intent to remain in Afghanistan up until he departed on the 15th of August.

“The White House’s release today of its after action report on the botched U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan is sad and untimely. It is nearly 2 years later and a clear attempt to bury the news during a holiday weekend,” said Jim Risch , ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “But it doesn’t take a report to show that Putin and Xi watched closely as the Biden Administration abandoned allies and failed to act decisively, costing the lives of U.S.

“It's absolutely not true,” countered Esper. “He could have renegotiated the deal. He could have told the Taliban, ‘If you don't [live] up to your end of the agreement, I'm going to begin redeploying troops back into Afghanistan.’ He could have sent a brigade of the 82nd Airborne, and they would have been there within a matter of days.”

McRaven also faulted the report for failing to answer questions about the August 26 suicide bomber at the Abbey Gate of the Kabul airport, which killed 13 American troops, wounded 45 others, and killed 170 Afghan civilians. “We are aware of the reports of social media posts and the department is reviewing the matter,” Sabrina Singh, the deputy Pentagon press secretary, told the New York Times, which was first to report the intelligence breach.
