Under The Waves is a powerful story with wonderful atmosphere, but a lack of polish holds it back from achieving its true potential.
Quick Links 2023 has turned into something of a remarkable year for games set at sea. Whether it's the absolute delight that is Dave The Diver or the horror catch-of-the-day that is Dredge, a nautical setting has proved very evocative for gamers this year. Enter Under The Waves, from developer Parallel Studio and publisher Quantic Dream, which takes an introspective and psychological approach to the depths.
Under The Waves is often absolutely gorgeous, too. Parallel Studio creates a world of contrast, between the sheer volume of life in the vibrant blue of the ocean at large and the murky depths where UniTrench has made its presence known.
Perhaps the stronger focus of the two is in the ecological side. UniTrench and its 1970s-esque techno-futurism is a suitably mysterious, faceless and suspicious organization, and its setup as an untrustworthy group feels completely in line with reality. After all, with behemoths like Shell and Exxon covering up climate change in the 1980s and funding climate change denial well into the modern day, the actions taken by UniTrench in this game feel almost quaint.
