The seizure “represents a significant escalation in the investigation” into the North Carolina senator's stock trades
on Wednesday night after the North Carolina lawmaker was served a search warrant, part of the Justice Department’s investigation into suspicious stock sales that the senator made just before the coronavirus caused the U.S. market to crash.
The North Carolina Senator is under investigation for selling a sizable portion of his portfolio—up to $1.72 million in stocks through 33 different transactions, as ProPublica first—on February 13, a week before the coronavirus pandemic caused the stock market to plunge. As a member of the Senate health committee, Burr was among those privy to early briefings on the coronavirus from public health officials, one of which took place just a day before he made the sales.
