A historic structure in the former stronghold of the America's Cup will be the new home of the National Sailing Hall of Fame.
... [+]According to the Newport Historical Society, the Armory was erected by the State of Rhode in 1894. “Originally, it was constructed as a headquarters and meeting hall for light infantry and naval reserves,” says Executive Director Ruth Taylor. “Our notes indicate that there’s some notion that it may never really have been used to store armaments, that it may just have been a headquarters building that looked like an armory.
From 1930 to 1983, Newport played host to the America’s Cup, which boasts the oldest active international trophy in sailing and regularly draws teams spending upwards of $100 million to compete. The historic Armory building was home to international press corps covering the event during the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. It was in this building that some of competitive sailing’s titans were interviewed before and after competition.
