Aaron Rodgers didn't need much time to offer a preview of a special connection with one of his targets.
It was the second big play by Wilson on the four-play, 52-yard scoring drive to give the Jets a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Wilson drew a pass interference penalty for 22 yards to get the Jets inside of the Giants’ 25 yard-line. After a quick pass to Mecole Hardman for a 10-yard gain, Rodgers found Wilson for the touchdown -- it ended up being his final snap of the night.
The first drive didn’t go so well for the Jets. Rodgers faced some pressure from the Giants, playing behind four of the five projected Week 1 starters on the offensive line: left guard Laken Tomlinson, center Connor McGovern, right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker and right tackle Mekhi Becton. But overall, it was an ideal debut for Rodgers. The Jets were the visitors, but he still drew a loud cheer from a mostly full MetLife Stadium when he took the field for the Jets’ first offensive series early in the first quarter. Rodgers gave the crowd the ASL sign for “I love you” as he came onto the field for the first time as a Jet.
The crowd will be much bigger and the ovation much louder the next time we’ll see Rodgers on this field: A little more than two weeks from now, on Sept. 11, when the Jets open their season against the Bills on Monday Night Football.
