The second in the Spider-Verse trilogy, Across The Spider-Verse has smashed box office records and has become Sony Pictures Animation's biggest success to date.
Throughout its theatrical run, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse made $689,810,862 against a production budget of $100m. This is nearly two times the worldwide gross of its predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and plenty to place the Sony Pictures Animation firmly among the superhero movie big-leagues. With that being said, however, the DCEU timeline still boasts some even greater successes.
With Across the Spider-Verse being so popular, this goes to show just how well the DCEU actually did in its heyday. The Spider-Verse sequel has proved that Sony can in fact make incredible Marvel movies, but Spider-Man as a franchise has always been something of a cash cow. With the DCEU's most successful lineup of movies, however, it is hard to ignore the obvious absence of any made after 2018.
Why The DCEU's Recent Box Office Results Make The Spider-Verse More Impressive It hasn't been since Aquaman's record-breaking worldwide box office result that the DCEU has managed to break $400 million. There have been 8 DCEU releases since the release of Aquaman, with 2019's Shazam and 2022's Black Adam being the only of those 8 to even break $300 million.
All of this means that the Spider-Verse franchise has a very promising future, while the upcoming DCU reboot is a pretty necessary step in the right direction for DC's cinematic future. In the meantime, DC will no doubt be leaning on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to leave the DCEU on a high note while recouping some of their losses.
